HILO, Hawai\u02bbi \u2013 March 12, 2020 \u2013 In light of safety and health concerns and after serious consideration,<\/p>\n

the organizers and sponsors of the 2020 Merrie Monarch Festival announced today that the event will not be held.

\n\u201cThis was such a hard decision to make,\u201d said Merrie Monarch Festivals President Luana Kawelu,<\/p>\n

\u201cbut we could not risk the health and wellbeing of our community,<\/p>\n

h\u0101lau\u00a0participants, vendors and the thousands of people who attend Merrie Monarch every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, we believe that keeping people healthy and safe must be the highest priority,<\/span><\/p>\n

and we all need to take on this kuleana in the face of the threat posed by COVID-19.\u201d

\nUnderstanding the need to address h\u0101lau and visitor accommodations and transportation,<\/span><\/p>\n

Kawelu added, \u201cplease give our airlines and hotels a day or so to sort out details.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is such an undertaking for all of them – their willingness and cooperation to work <\/span><\/p>\n

with us is a saving grace. We will update our own festival information when details become available.\u201d

especially with all the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d said Chris Tatum,<\/span><\/p>\n

and especially of their k\u016bpuna.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that cancelling this year\u2019s festival is necessary for the health of our l\u0101hui<\/span><\/p>\n

and the perpetuation of our culture and its intergenerational values,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
